Car jerks in 1st gear - Smooth otherwise, gear changes smooth

Nissan Terrano 2016 SUV, Manual, Petrol 25000 miles
Car jerks in 1st gear - Smooth otherwise, gear changes smooth - dealer even said 'No problem, you can change clutch but not recommended to change just now' - they only want part to fail & make money but it only has some 25000miles.
Before anyone focuses on 'bad driving' - I have been driving for 20yrs+, this car is mostly driven by 2 drivers and we have other cars - we've had Toyota's, Honda's, Cielo's...

The jerking in 1st gear could be caused by a variety of issues, some of which could include:

Engine misfire: If the engine is not running smoothly, it can cause the car to jerk and shake. This could be due to an issue with the ignition system, fuel system, or air intake.
Transmission slipping: If the transmission is slipping, it can cause the car to jerk and shake, especially in lower gears like 1st. This could be due to low transmission fluid, a slipping clutch, or a worn clutch.
Engine idle speed: If the engine idle speed is too low, it can cause the car to jerk and shake. The engine idle speed is controlled by the throttle body and the throttle position sensor.
Engine mounts: If the engine mounts are worn or damaged, they can cause the engine to shake, which can be transmitted to the car's body and cause it to jerk.

Thanks for the reply - is there anything I can check before getting 'robbed' by a mechanic - I cant work on cars - im just an average user :-) Anything other than 'go to qualified mechanic' will help - maybe something more specific like 'change x oil'

Jerks when accelerating

Nissan Terrano 2006  178000 miles
My vehicle is a Terrano 4x2 turbo diesel and, when driving at third or fifth gear, at the moment of reaching 2500 rpm, the van jerks weirdly and the gearbox and lever move considerably. I've replaced all the filters, checked the tank and cleaned the injectors, but nothing happened. Might it be the gearbox?

Hi, the jerks in Terrano vans tend to be caused by a failure in the neutral position sensor. It is located on the upper part of the gearbox and you can easily find it by removing the gear shift cover. You disconnect it and your problem will be solved. You can as well replace it. Good luck.
tomyli from other a year ago
After changing maf an all other sensors on engine checking turbo, i read your comment and diconeted neutral position sensor car drives perfectly. Talking about nissan terrano 3.0 113kw 2002 r20 zd20engine. One more on diagnostic was error on boost sensor but after disconnecting neutral position error was gone.

Dashboard turns off

I have a Terrano 2 2005 and the dashboard turns off; everything stops working: the display and the gauges. When disconnecting the battery, it resets and everything starts working again, but only for a while, because the failure returns. I would appreciate it if you could give me some advice or suggestion.

Gears failure

Nissan Terrano 2008  190000 miles
Hi, I have a Nissan Terrano, the third gear is failing, and the fourth a little bit as well. When these gears are set and I accelerate, the car jerks. It stops when moving the lever to the front. Is there any sensor that might be failing? Thanks for your help.

Hello, replace the neutral sensor or switch from the gearbox. You can find it easily by removing the gear stick cover; it is the one that is right next to the reverse switch. Hope it helps and good luck.

First, remove the panel from where the air is controlled and check the wire connections. If this is not the failure, you will need to remove the whole dashboard and check the water radiator and its engagement and disengagement mechanism. Also, go to the engine compartment and disconnect the water hose that comes from the interior radiator, in order to discard that it is blocked. There are no other possibilities, good luck.

I am really glad you took your time to answer me. I checked it and there was a wire clamp that was loose and it was not allowing its functioning. Thank you very much, bill.

Primer pump failure SolvedSolved

Nissan Terrano 2007  205000 miles
Hi, I have a Nissan Teerano 4x4 2007 and I cannot make the primer pump start working. I've changed filters and the primer pump itself, but the problem persists. If anyone can help me, I will be really thankful. I forgot to mention that the first problem appeared when starting the engine, as the vehicle stalled. I then applied some pressure to the fuel pump and the vehicle worked; but the following day the same happened.

bill from United States 9 years ago
If you have already discarded the one-way valve failure, the air entrance is the only other failure possible. Check the filters' joints and hoses properly; there are usually leakages there. I have heard that when not original fuel filters are installed, air tends to get into the system and the engine is then really hard to start. It can as well be that your mechanic did not grease the O-ring properly. Hope it helps.
lucius36 from United States 9 years ago
Thank you very much for your suggestions. The problem was an air entrance through a filter.

Gearbox noise

Nissan Terrano 2002  150000 miles
Hello, I have a Nissan Terrano and, when stopped or in neutral, a gearbox noise appears. When clutching or when driving at low or high rpm, the noise disappears. I was told it is a normal noise in the Terrano gearboxes, but I would like to know if this is true. What do you think?

The same happened to me and the gearbox must be failing. Be careful because a bearing might get damaged.
bill from United States 9 years ago
It is the neutral bearing from the gearbox. You need to replace it as well as maintaining the whole gearbox. I recommend you to change it once the noise becomes really annoying, and not before.

The gearbox has a neutral position sensor; if this problem does not appear with any other gear, the failure must be there.
