Code 89 indicates a failure in the thermostat. If it loses power and you feel the acceleration does not respond properly, you will need to replace the coil.

If there is a loss of power, is it the ignition coil that needs changing.

I believe the loss of power is due to the Turbo not kicking in, igling is fine, the drive is fine but with limited power, it does`nt missfire at all, and when driving just when I push it enough to where the turbo is supposed to come in, it does`nt, instead I get the Code 89 on the dash. I have replaced the thermostart but what I did not replace was the coolant sensor, I`m not sure if that too, could be a factor.

@kallieReplace thermostat. If it was ignition coil it it would display ABS alarm

Hi ,
I have a chevrolet sonic 2013 model, it shows code 89, and drive for a short distance then brings on an ABS sign then the power drops and start idle like misfiring, please help me with what I need to get it to normal again

Hi, I have a similar problem with my 2013 Chevrolet Sonic. Code 89 is followed by code 84, and reading the comments earlier in this blog, it seems to be the thermostat... Very expensive component to replace, I've had to do it before.

Check your ignition coil,it might loose contact to your spark plug,possible cause is the contactor get corroded,there is a spring inside and same like a fuse.

Code 89 hv something to do with a coolant system...mine was showing tht code 89 n the fan kips running n i bought a thermostat n its housing.it dznt show the code anymore n the fan run normal n stops when it hv to.
