Car doesn't start right away

Ford Focus 2008  110236 miles
Ok so my 2008 Ford Focus sometimes doesn't want to turn on, then a day later it will!!! When I try to turn it on the lights come on but the car doesn't start, took it to get a mechanic to get a diagnostic test, they said it MIGHT be the fuel pump! Just wanting to know if anyone else has the same problem & if it's fixable by what I'm reading if I replace the fuel pump the car still won't start?!?!

I put 500 ml of methanol in 2 tanks of gas. I also used car starter fluid in intake. Starts when plugged in but anything below zero no. Check your gas pedal see if its floppy. I put zip ties and it upped my idle speed to 1000 from about 500 rpm. It doesnt flop now. Tomorrow im going to drive it.

Most likely is the ignition switch is worn. To test, push in on the key when trying to start and jiggle it while in the fully turned position.
This a very common problem with the Focus due to a poor switch design.

Are you sure it's the fuel tank? Is there any additional detail you can give us, for example, does any warning light turn on? It might be worth checking these: http://www.startmycar.com/ford/focus/p…

I had the same issue. My car is currently in the shop and I have been told it needs a new purge vavle, fuel pump, and fuel tank for a total of $2400. My extended warranty will only pay for half as they state Ford knows there is an issue but they will not cover it under warranty.

Try just a purge valve or new throttle cable. I just use starter fluid or i press the gas pedal down once or twice. Then turn it over

Fuel pump engages intermittently

Ford Focus 2008 4 door 2.0 sedam 128000 miles
Have to click ignition on and off repeatedly sometimes til you hear the pump then no problems. Sidenote: trunk is soaked some sort of breach where water is entering trunk compartment. Could that be affecting wiring? Or possibly is it a relay? Battery new terminals clean no stalling literally no other issues.

It sounds like you are experiencing an issue with the fuel pump in your 2008 Ford Focus engaging intermittently. There could be a number of reasons why this is occurring, and it will be necessary to diagnose the problem to determine the cause.
One potential cause could be a problem with the fuel pump relay. The fuel pump relay is responsible for supplying power to the fuel pump, and if it is not functioning properly, it could cause the fuel pump to engage intermittently.
Another potential cause could be a problem with the wiring for the fuel pump. If the wiring is damaged or corroded, it could cause the fuel pump to engage intermittently.
If you have recently noticed that the trunk of your vehicle is soaked with water, this could also potentially be a contributing factor to the issue you are experiencing with the fuel pump. Water entering the trunk compartment could potentially cause problems with the wiring or other electrical components in the vehicle.
I recommend having a mechanic diagnose the issue to determine the cause and recommend the appropriate repairs. They will be able to test the fuel pump relay and check the wiring and other electrical components to identify any problems and make the necessary repairs.

My car isn't starting

Ford Focus 2003 hatchback, automatic  26000 miles
All dashboard lights working. But the starter and the fuel pump aren't picking up at all. I've checked all the fuses and couldn't find any cause.

The issue with your 2003 Ford Focus not starting can be caused by a few different things. Here are some common causes for this issue:

Battery: If the battery is weak, it may not have enough power to start the engine. Try jumping the battery or have it tested to see if it's the issue.
Starter Motor: The starter motor may be faulty and not engaging the flywheel to crank the engine. Have the starter motor tested.
Ignition Switch: The ignition switch could be faulty and not sending the proper signal to the starter motor to engage.
Fuel Pump: If the fuel pump is not functioning, the engine will not start. Check the fuel pump relay and fuel pump fuse to see if they are functioning properly.
Engine Control Module (ECM): If the Engine Control Module (ECM) is not functioning, it may prevent the engine from starting. Have the ECM checked.
Camshaft or Crankshaft Position Sensors: These sensors are responsible for telling the ECM the position of the engine and if they are not functioning, the engine may not start.

Stalls when stopped

Ford Focus 2011 1.6 hatchback 67044 miles
When stopping the engine just dies. I was told it was the petrol, so changed that from E10 to E5 and still the same issue. I have had a full service and asked the mechanic then and he suggested changing the petrol as this was happening before that service. Would it be the timing belt has slipped or blocked fuel filter, but again I'm told that this model dose not have a fuel filter.

So it been 5 days... Did your problem get fixed? I'm wondering cause the mechanic said it was the fuel pump for my car as well but wouldn't want to waste money on something that won't fix the car!! - Helena

Intermittent starting/running

Ford Focus 2007 Automatic 102000 miles
Car will turn over & fire up but then snubs out right away. If you push on gas as it's turning over sometimes it will keep running until you release gas pedal - then it snubs right away. This happened for a few days, got it to a shop when it started & ran fine. It was there a week & of course no issue. Picked it up, stopped 2 places on way home & started with no issues. Got home (about 13 mile drive) & paked in garage. Next am went to leave for work and same problem. Tried several times a day for 4 days & same thing. Towed it to shop thinking they'll get to see problem… Read complete

Won't start at all

Ford Focus 2001 1.6 se wagon 193580 miles
Last night I changed the fuel filter in my car after it died. It would crank but wouldn't start. Sounded like it wasn't getting enough gas so we figured it was a clogged fuel filter. Then it still didn't do anything. Now this morning it's not even trying to crank it's just making a click noise when I turn the key. I have no idea where to even start with it.

Replaced fuel pump now car struggles to start

Ford Focus 2008  200000 miles
After replacing fuel pump, it ran good for a day then the check engine light comes on and if it turn the car off, it struggles to start back up. I went to AutoZone about the check engine code and the code was something like replace fuel pump, diesel pump only. I’m so lost and frustrated. Help! When I put the old pump back in, the check engine light goes away but car still is acting like it isn’t getting fuel. I replaced fuel filter a few months ago.

Crank but no fire

Ford Focus 2010 Ford Focus Hatchback 1.6 TDCI Titainium  750000 miles
With various models in the 2005 to 2011 its seems an absolute minefield to get the correct info. Here goes , I need to find the exact location for the fuel pump on this vehicle. As in 2008 there was a design change regarding the location of the pump. Instead of it being a submerged type it has now been transferred to the engine which I cannot seem to locate. I have traced the fuel line from the tank where the FUEL PUMP sender unit it is up to the filter unit on the f/n/s of the engine which the 2 pipes go to the rear of the engine which connect to a block and from there splits and comes to connect on the offside but nothing in between. Wheres the pump.

Recently changed fuel pump

Ford Focus 2001 Se 132000 miles
So I recently had my fuel pump changed along with fuel filter and what they told me was like the main artery of my oil. Now my car has been running rough it stalls out and when I push the gas pedal the car dies , I have trouble getting it started and when I do it starts to shake and die. Long story short I took it to another auto shop , they had many error codes from diagnostics and found all the sensors were fine and when they replaced a wire on my Maf it's still dying when they press the gas pedal. So they said I have a short , could the other auto shop done somethings to my car? It never has done this

Will not turn over

Ford Focus 2013 4 cyl se hatch back  44000 miles
I can go to start my 2013 focus. Everything powers up. Fuel pump comes on but when you turn the switch to start nothing. I thought maybe it was a saftey switch so I opened and closed the hood. And it started. But now it is doing it again just not all the time. I bought the car wrecked and there was a computer on the driver side behind the bumnper cover that was exposed to weater. Not sure what it controls. Any idea... Thanks randy
